Ohio Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit

If you purchase energy-efficient windows or doors, you may be eligible for a federal tax credit. This tax credit can help you save money on your taxes.

To qualify for the credit, the windows or doors need to meet Energy Star standards for energy efficiency. These standards can be found on the Energy Star website. All doors and most* windows purchased from Garfield 1-2323 meet the Energy Star requirements for northern climates.

The tax credit is a way to reduce the amount of taxes you owe to the government. It can be claimed on your income tax return, and it’s based on a percentage of the cost of the windows or doors you installed. This tax credit is available for eligible taxpayers who purchased and installed qualifying windows or doors between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2032.

Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit Amount:

  • Exterior Doors Credit: 30% of costs up to $250 per door, up to a total of $500
  • Exterior Windows and Skylights: 30% of costs up to $600
  • The amount of the tax credit varies based on the cost of the windows or doors and the percentage of energy savings they provide. Be sure to read the IRS fact sheet and the Energy Star websites for more information about eligibility requirements and how to claim the tax credit.

To apply for the tax credit, you’ll need to:

  • Purchase windows or doors that meet the Energy Star requirements. All Garfield 1-2323 doors meet the Energy Star requirements for northern climate to be eligible for tax credits, and most* windows meet the Energy Star Most Efficient requirements to be eligible for tax credits.
  • Keep your receipt and a copy of the manufacturer’s certification statement for each product you purchase.
  • When you file your taxes, fill out IRS Form 5695 and attach it to your tax return.

Important notes:

  • A tax credit is not a deduction, which reduces the amount of your taxable income. Instead, it directly reduces the amount of tax you owe. This means that if you are eligible for the credit, you can receive a larger refund or owe less in taxes.
  • The amount of the credit may vary depending on the specific product and installation costs. As with all tax matters, it’s a good idea to consult with a tax professional for guidance.
